Using a Strengths- Based Perspective to Change Perceptions: An Exploratory Study.
- Authors
Rice, Karen; Girvin, Heather
- Abstract
The article discusses research examining whether a child welfare course that emphasizes a strengths-based approach to practice with families, to prepare students for engaging families and building a helping alliance, exerted a positive influence on undergraduate social work students’ perception of the parent/caseworker relationship. According to the authors, the field of child welfare is beset with negative perceptions that could potentially influence the way caseworkers approach their practice with families. A comparison of undergraduate students' perceptions, both enrolled and un-enrolled in the course, and implications for social work practice and pedagogy is discussed.
