Manche Forscher stellen sich das Universum der Proteine als die Gesamtheit aller Proteine vor, die die Natur ersonnen hat. Um den Kampf ums Überleben zu unterstützen oder eine neue Nische zu besetzen, nutzen emergierende Enzyme vielmehr existierende katalytische Mechanismen und Maschinerien.[18] Die biologische Welt ist voll von Proteinen, deren chemische Möglichkeiten über die Funktionen, für die sie zu gegebener Zeit selektioniert wurden, deutlich hinausreichen. Wir hoffen, dass die bemerkenswerte Selektivität, die niedrigen Kosten und die Möglichkeit, reichlich vorhandenes Eisen zu verwenden, um gespannte Ringe zu synthetisieren, die auf anderem Wege schwierig zu erhalten sind, neue Anwendungen für diese faszinierenden Produkte eröffnet. Im Fall des von Rma cyt c abgeleiteten Enzyms für die Si-H-Insertion zeigte die Röntgenstrukturanalyse, dass die drei aktivitätssteigernden Mutationen die Struktur einer Schleife über dem Eisen veränderten.
