- Abstract
Results are presented from a study of the macrostructure, chemical nonuniformity, and mechanical characteristics along and across propeller shafts made from 39.5-ton ingots. The optimum parameters for casting large forging ingots are determined, these ingots serving as the semifinished product for obtaining finished products used in machine construction. The uniformity of the carbon distribution in the ingots and the forgings is maximized so as to minimize variations in the mechanical characteristics along and across the finished products.
