- Title
Toward a Grand Union: The Banyan Tree of Knowledge.
- Authors
Brinkman, Richard; Brinkman, June
- Abstract
The authors discuss attempts made to achieve the goal of unity of knowledge from the perspective of Veblenian economics. They attempt to demonstrate that unity of knowledge is important and relevant to the dynamics of the evolution of culture. According to Thorstein Veblen, science considered as technology, as applied science, serves as the basis to propel human culture forward. Simon Kuznets argued that science is a social institution and functions as a useful agent for humankind. This view of science as an institution contradicts the assumption that institutions are static, bound to the past, and made up of ceremonial elements.
