- Abstract
Comparing the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in elderly practitioners of outdoor physical exercises between the dry and the rainy seasons. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study involving two different seasons (dry and rainy) comprised 187 nonsmoker and former smoker elderly individuals. The respiratory symptoms, peripheral oxygen saturation, weight, height, expiratory peak flow, climatological data and about wild fires were collected between september, 2013 and march, 2014. The Student's T, the Mann-Whitney and Chi-Square test were carried out at significance level p <0.05. Results: higher temperatures and lower relative air humidity were observed in the dry season (p<0.05). There was association between respiratory symptoms and drought ((χ2=49.46; p<0.001); RP = 1.703; [IC95%(1.463-1.981)]). Symptoms such as wheezing, dyspnea, suputum, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea and sneezing, as well as lower peripheral saturation were more prevalent during the dry season (p<0.05).Conclusion: The higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms observed in the elderly practitioners of exercise in the dry season draws attention to more care to the health of this population during the development of outdoors activities, being necessary more public policies for the guidance of health risks
