Prevalence and correlates of fear of falling among elderly population in Varamin in 2019.

- Abstract
Introduction: Falls are a major public health problem in the elderly population. Fear of falling among elderly persons can compromise quality of life by limiting mobility, diminished sense of well-being and reduced social. The major challenge would be on the prevention of falls among them. Hence there is a need to highlight the problems related to fall faced by the elderly in Iran.To study the prevalence of falling and its risk factors among the elderly population in Varamin town. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in Varamin. 659 elderly subjects above 60 years were cluster sampling selected from urban and rural areas and interviewed for falling using Easy Care Questionnaire, history of falls and risk factors. Chi-square test was used for group comparisons. Multiple logistic regression analysis was then performed to examine the factors associated with Falling Results: Of 659 participants, 373 (56/6%) were female. The prevalence of falling among the elderly was 25.1%. Result of chi-square showed significant association of falling were sex, marital status, job, source of income, having chronic diseases among them. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors associated with falling were diabetic (OR=1.67, CI: 1.10- 2.50), arthritis (OR=1.94, CI: 1.25-3.02), visual disorders (OR=1.76, CI: 1.06-2.93), chronic diseases (OR=3.18, CI: 1.62-6.26) and need to caregiver (OR=1.78, CI: 1.13-2.68). Conclusion: Falling is a health problem among the elderly living in Varamin needs urgent attention. It represents a significant threat to socialization, independence and morbidity or mortality. Knowledge of risk factors of falling may be useful in developing multidimensional strategies to reduce it among elderly.
