- Abstract
The article discusses a study that evaluated the safety and feasibility of extubation during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The authors found that a standardized protocol for extubation during ECMO resulted in successful extubation in 21% of patients with no major adverse events. The study also compared their findings to previous literature and found a lower rate of extubation failure. However, the authors note that further research is needed to determine the most accurate criteria for optimal management of patients requiring ECMO support. They also suggest incorporating early detection of the Macklin effect on chest CT scans into patient selection criteria for awake ECMO.
