- Abstract
Abstract: Objectives: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is an emerging technique for the treatment of patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis with contraindications for surgery. We analyze the role of echocardiography in this procedure. Materials and methods: We considered anatomical complexity of the aortic valve in the context of its structural and functional unit, the aortic root. We analyze echocardiographic information needed in patient selection for TAVI: measurement of aortic root, morphological assessment of valve and estimation of the severity of stenosis. These parameters provide important information in the choice of approach and type of percutaneous device to use. Conclusions: Echocardiogram represents the essential examination for the selection of canditates for TAVI. It has a central role not only for diagnosis, but to guide the interventional strategy.
