- Abstract
The article presents a study of more than 2000 adults over age 65, designed to assess the long-term impact of cognitive training on the instrumental activities of their daily lives. The study ran from 1998 to 2004. One quarter of the volunteer subjects served as a control group, while the other three quarters were trained in either verbal episodic memory, inductive reasoning, or speed of processing in visual search and identification. Training in inductive reasoning was found to have significant effects on prevention of functional decline, as measured by self-report of subjects. Details of the methodology used and results obtained are provided.
