You Can't Unring a Bell.
- Authors
Schwenk, Thomas L.
- Abstract
The essay details the author's thoughts as a physician and father who is waiting outside an operating room for information about his daughter. He tells about the denial concerning the possibility of breast cancer which seemed rational since the family history was negative for the disease. With the diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), he escapes into the role of consulting physician and wonders how other parents deal with the sadness and fear. He mentions how he managed similar experiences with other family members.
