- Abstract
A 72-year-old, male patient presented with difficulty moving following a fever of 1-week's duration. Intravascular hemolysis is one of the complications of I C. perfringens i bacteremia, which is caused by an -toxin produced by the pathogen. Its incidence is 7-15% in I C. perfringens i bacteremia and is associated with a mortality rate as high as 80%.[1] Peripheral blood smear reveals the bacteria in approximately 20% of I C. perfringens i bacteremia.[2] Peripheral blood smear may be useful for early recognition of I C. perfringens i bacteremia in patients with gross hemolysis and suspected sepsis.
