- Abstract
The catholic „Rheinischer Merkur" isn't anymore an independent weekly newspaper since december 2010. Instead of this there is a new supplement with six pages in the weekly newspaper „Die Zeit". This article remembers the history of the „Rheinischer Merkur", explains the background of the closing and offers a summary of reactions to the decision. The catholic bishops' converence said the reasons for ending up with the newspaper were a decreasing number of subscribers and remarkable subsidies. In 2010 the paper needed 2,5 Million Euro, told chief editor Michael Rutz. It was said, the church wanted to concentrate more on activities in the internet and strengthen the catholic newsagency KNA. The „Rheinischer Merkur" was owned amongst others by nine german dioceses.
