- Abstract
The article is related to Dr. Theodore Seuss Geisel, who supplemented the English abecedary with twenty letters "On beyond zebra". The twenty letters are fanciful ligatures of roman letters, reflecting the art more of the letterer than of the calligrapher. Linguists approach the study of language from two complementary viewpoints, formal and functional. The history of writing turns out to be a fairly useful to have after discovery, nearby peoples tend to adapt the scripts by reduction of inventory, additions, combinations, alterations, borrowing and simplifications of letters. There has, then, been fairly large amount of diversity in adapting scripts to fit their languages, but they can be sorted into just a few processes.
