- Abstract
Media coverage of social housing in New Zealand focuses on scarcity, dysfunction and unaffordability. Ko Te Reo ō Ngā Tāngata / The People's Voice is a socially engaged art project that presents a counter-narrative, by channelling and visualising content directly from tenants of Wellington City Council social housing. Informed by methods used in journalism and ethnography, David Cook (photographer), Anna Brown (designer) and Mark Amery (journalist, curator) collaborated with thirty tenants to co-create a street exhibition and newspaper. Working with manākitanga (empowerment) as a guiding principle, the culturally diverse team created a range of stories including themes of protest, sustainability, mental health, migrant and refugee experience, and creativity. The project took the form of a street exhibition and a tabloid supplement, distributed within the regional newspaper. Tenants also employed the newspaper as a form of activism, distributing free copies on the street and to people in positions of power.
