- Abstract
This article discusses the development of a mentor training curriculum for LGBTQIA+ health professionals. The curriculum was designed to address the needs of underrepresented health professionals, specifically LGBTQIA+ mentees and those focused on LGBTQIA+ health. The program was piloted with faculty mentors who reported positive outcomes, including increased satisfaction, skill gains, and behavioral changes. The findings suggest that the curriculum effectively prepares mentors to support mentees with different identities and could be integrated into other trainings to enhance inclusive mentoring. The article emphasizes the importance of tailored mentorship for marginalized trainees and the need for inclusive mentorship curricula. Additionally, the article mentions a case study focused on a research team led by Dr. Caniglia, exploring the experience of a Black transgender woman who used to work with the team. The study highlights the positive impact of the mentor training program on mentoring skills and behavior changes. The program has been shared with professional societies and will be offered as part of the LGBTQIA+ Health Fellowship Program sponsored by the American Medical Association Foundation. Future research will assess long-term outcomes and potential biases, with the goal of improving mentorship and clinical care, education, and research in LGBTQIA+ health.
