- Abstract
Psychoanalytic reflection and practice must take the Shoah into account. I argue for an integration of Levinas's reading of ethics as an asymmetrical responsibility for the other with Laplanche's theorization regarding the revival of the fundamental anthropological situation in analysis. It is possible to enrich Laplanche's concepts with the idea of an ethical seduction active in the psychoanalytic situation echoing the ethical exigency at the beginning of life arising from the violence inflicted on the parents by the infant's distress and absolute fragility. The analyst is subject to a similar ethical upheaval which is transformed into a position of matricial space made of emotionally "affected" (cathected or invested) asymmetrical responsibility for the patient.
