- Abstract
The article focuses on a study to determine the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative alcohol use disorder (AUD) in patients after bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is an effective and durable treatment for severe obesity. A prospective cohort study of adults who underwent bariatric surgery at 10 U.S. hospitals was conducted. The study showed results that the prevalence of AUD symptoms did not significantly differ from one year before to one year after bariatric surgery, but was significantly higher in the second postoperative year. Finally the study concludes that the prevalence of AUD was associated with male sex, younger age and numerous preoperative variables including regular alcohol consumption, smoking and drug use.
