- Abstract
Historical environments are tissues that establish a connection between the past and the present and reveal the history as a whole. Historical environments an important conservation area in the world and Turkey, it is also worth examining these areas when viewed from this perspective. However, in recent years, there has been an increase in studies examining protected areas, including historical environments, from a holistic perspective. In some of these studies, protected areas are examined in terms of their relations with local people in their regions. This study aims to examine the Metropolis Ancient City, which is an important ancient city in its region, in terms of the relationship between the protected area and the local people. In this study, a mixed research method was used which combines quantitative and qualitative research. In this context, was examined in various periods between 2016-2018 in Torbalı where the ancient city is located. A total of 396 people were surveyed in Torbalı and its vicinity. The survey included 30 statements prepared according to the 5-point Likert scale. The data obtained from the survey were analyzed with SPSS program. Also, interviews were conducted in Yeniköy and Özbey neighborhoods where the ancient city is located. The data obtained after the interviews using semi-structured questionnaire were examined together with the observations made in the field. After the study, although there is a positive relationship between the ancient city and the local people, it was found that due to some problems, the connection of the local people with Metropolis tends to weaken. The main problems faced by local people are; not being able to earn income from the ancient city, the problems experienced due to the site being a protected area and problems with local governments. Considering that the support of local people in the region will bring more successful results in the protection process, it would be appropriate to take into consideration the problems experienced in the region and to involve local people in the planning.
