- Abstract
This paper attempts to identify the causal reasoning skills of advanced university students, skills that are applied to the interpretation of texts with disciplinary content. The sample is constituted by 28 students of the fourth level of the bachelor's degree in Biology, all of whom have to interpret a text of their specific field. The instrument consists of two parts. The first task entails establishing if the derivations done working with two propositions that were taken from the text, are true, false or indefinite. Each derivation is corresponded with two logical figures (modus ponens and modus tollens) and two fallacies (Denial of the Antecedent and Affirmation of the Consequent). In the second task a number of statements are presented and it must be decided if the causal relation is determinant or participant. Most students made use of logical reasoning in the form of modus ponens and modus tollens, with a predominance of the former. In general, the students don't identify the fallacies as such, while they all identify both contributing factors in the second task, as well as the majority of the indefinites.
