- Abstract
Objective: Cardiac complications are the leading cause of perioperative morbidity and mortality following noncardiac surgery. A strategic preoperative evaluation holds the potential to reduce perioperative cardiac events and healthcare costs. Main findings: A close working relationship between the primary care physician, cardiologist, surgeon and anesthesiologist will facilitate rational, tailored and optimized management decisions that constitute our best opportunity to reduce perioperative cardiovascular risk. Conclusion: Patients with low clinical risk factors and good functional status, undergoing a low or intermediate risk surgery, have an excellent prognosis and may proceed to surgery without further delay. In addition, stable patients who have previously undergone coronary revascularization may also safely undergo surgery.
