- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that causes serious health complications, especially in non-controlled patients. Prevalence of DM is increasing worldwide and it is known to affect the health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The Medical Outcome Study Health Survey 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) is an important tool evaluating Quality of Life (QoL), and it is divided in a mental and a physical component. The aim of this study was to describe the QoL in patients with type 2 diabetes and to compare the QoL in controlled and non-controlled patients. Controlled and non-controlled outpatients with type 2 diabetes seen at the Universidade Federal do Ceará (northeast of Brazil) were evaluated regarding their QoL. The Medical Outcome Study Health Survey 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) was used to evaluate QoL, while glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA[sub 1c] was used to evaluate glycemic control. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to describe the data and to evaluate the relationship between QoL and diabetes control (SPSS 13.0). A total of 99 patients (80 women, 19 men), with a mean age of 68.76±5.6 yr, DM duration of 12.11±8.18 yr were evaluated. From those, 52.5% were using insulin end 55.3% patients had HbA[sub 1c]>7%. Patients were said to have reasonable/good QoL when SF-36 total score was above 50, which occurred in 68.7% of the 99 patients, with a mean of 61.51±19.21. Mental Components Summary (MCS) score was 65.31±19.73 and Physical Components Summary (PCS) score was 57.93±19.57. In the diabetes controlled group, the SF-36 total score was 61.70±19.08, the MCS score 64.75±20.88, and the PCS score was 58.95±18.31, while in the diabetes non-controlled group, the SF-36 total score was 61.20±19.96, the MCS score was 65.27±19.58 and the PCS score was 57.25±20.11, with no statistical difference between groups. There was also no relationship between QoL and glycemic control. Our data suggest a more prevalent reasonable/good QoL of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes of the northeast of Brazil, which seems to be not influenced by their glycemic control.
