- Abstract
BACKGROUND: The reaction caused by the contact with caterpillars is known as erucism. It usually manifests as an unspecific and self-limited irritative dermatitis, although some reactions can be severe. There are outbreaks of unspecific irritative dermatitis caused by direct contact with these insects or by the dispersion of their hairs through the air. In most cases, the treatment is symptomatic, and the removal of hairs must be opportune. Because of the non-specificity of its clinical manifestations, it is a subreported and sub-suspected dermatosis. CLINICAL CASE: A 21-year-old female, with a dermatosis that affected neck, with multiple erythematous papules. The patient referred that caterpillars dropped over her after passing by a tree. The urticarial hairs were removed with clamps and tape with benzoin, in addition, we prescribed desonide cream and loratadine for 5 days, with complete remission of the dermatosis. CONCLUSION: The caterpillar is identified as Hylesia nigricans.
