- Abstract
Background: Myxedema is an infiltrative dermopathy, it usually is located at the pretibial region and it is associated to thyroid endocrinopathies; its clinical manifestations indicate the diagnostic guide. Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of pretibial myxedema at the moment of diagnosis in patients with Graves' disease attended at Dermatological Service consultation of National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubiran. Patients and methods: A transversal, descriptive and retrolective study was done during 12 years, in which clinical characteristics of patients with Graves' disease and pretibial myxedema are described. Results: In 46% of cases, clinical manifestations of pretibial myxedema were the classical infiltrated plaques denominated "in orange peel"; 27% were en diffuse form with follicular-center papules, and 27% as nodules well delimitated distributed simetrically at pretibial region; in 22% of cases skin manifestations preceded clinical diagnosis. Conclusions: Clinical manifestations of pretibial myxedema described as "atypical" have been subestimated and should be considered in patients with thyroid disease, because they are helpful for the early diagnosis of endocrinopathy.
