- Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to assess the performance of zinc mine tailing waste as a substitute for cement (upto 20%) in concrete and in novelty effect of the mechanical treatment on the zinc tailing waste concrete is studied and compared with the results of the untreated zinc tailing waste. Mechanical and durability (water permeability, drying shrinkage, dynamic elastic modulus, and energy absorption capacity) tests were tailored to evaluate the effect of both treated and untreated zinc mine tailing waste in the study. Additionally, the scanning electron microscopic analysis and sustainability assessments of the concrete mixtures were also carried out. The mechanical and durability properties of the zinc tailing waste concrete decreased as the cement content reduce. However, the obtained test results revealed that comparable mechanical and durability performance was achieved with the 5% with both types of zinc mine tailing waste. The findings of the sustainability assessment revealed that replacing cement with the tailing waste lowered the embodied emission (EE) and embodied CO2 emission (ECO2E), which gives an encouraging insight into the development of eco-friendly concrete and helps to resolve the issue of waste disposal caused by zinc mine tailing waste.
