- Abstract
THIS study was undertaken to understand the impact of nudges on the pesticide consumption, paddy yield, profitability and efficiency in paddy production in Kalahandi district of Odisha state. Accordingly, two nudges were introduced to the treated households. The first nudge was focused on reducing the cognitive load in calculation of appropriate strength of the pesticide and second nudge was visual info-graphic poster helps in reminding the ill-effects of over use of pesticides and use of IPM. The required primary data were collected for two panels i.e., in June 2019 (baseline) and March 2020 (end line). The intervention have positively impacted in increase in the paddy yield by 11.10 quintals / ha. The variable cost was decreased by Rs.3,111 per hectare mainly due to the reduction in use of pesticides by around 549 g a.i./ha (insecticides by around 519 g a.i./ha), reduced cost of pest management by Rs.1100/ha. The combination of increased yield and reduced variable costs has resulted in increased net returns by Rs.23,595/ha. However, it was observed that the imposed interventions have no significant impact on the technical efficiency in paddy production during the study period. The interventions given to the treatment group of farmers acted as drivers of change in terms of proper resource utilisation by altering production behaviour of the farmers. This study demonstrated that there exists a huge scope in harnessing the potential of behavioural economics tools to democratically convince the farmers for the rational use of agro-chemicals.
