- Abstract
The article presents a commentary on a study which investigated the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Jewish and Arab populations in central Israel. According to the study findings, the incidence of CRC is higher in the Jewish populations while CRC tends to be right sided in the Arab population. Review of similar data reveal low incidence of CRC from other Arab communities. The differences may be attributed to the influence of culture and socioeconomic differences in dietary habits, obesity and gene-environment interactions. The investigation is important for the following reasons: CRC involves complex interactions between genetic and environment factors thus making it a multifactorial disease; and the formulation of therapeutic options may be developed from knowledge of such differences.
