- Abstract
There have been numerous studies published that have looked into the awareness level of Alzheimer's disease amongst the young adult population. The trend seems to be similar in different geographic regions, but there does exist variation between data. It would be interesting to see how different regions vary, and perhaps advocate for positive change, if necessary. The aim of this study was to examine the awareness level of young adults in Dublin, Ireland, with respect to Alzheimer's disease. A survey was designed to evaluate the awareness of young adults. A total of 36 people consented and completed the questionnaire; 18 were under 20 years old and 18 were 20 years old or older, 10 were male and 26 were female, while 12 (29%) had family members affected by the disease and 24 (71%) did not. 77% of the participants were well-aware of the disease, although only 44% believed they were. It seems that the young adult population is adequately aware of the disease, and may be able to improve standard of care as a result of higher knowledgeability. Follow-up studies should look into whether this trend transcends into other regions of the globe, and to determine how the high level of awareness can be mobilized to improve patient care.
