- Title
THE RURAL SUCCESSION MYTH.
- Authors
Paping, Richard; Kard, Envin
- Abstract
The article presents a rural case study of the children of farmers and peasants from 1740 to 1860 in reference to their household formation and occupational careers in Eastern Marne in Groningen province and Oosterhesselen in Drenthe province in the Netherlands. During this period rapid population growth occurred and, according to the authors, the lack of inheritance and succession of children had a high probability of leading to downward social mobility. Other topics discussed in the article include marriage practices in Western Europe, coexisting but different agricultural systems in the early modern period, and legislation governing inheritance.
