- Abstract
Aim To comparatively assess the perception of pain as experienced by the patients by the use of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive scalers. Materials and Methods This was a randomised split mouth study in which scaling was carried out by the piezoelectric scaler in a partial area of the mouth and by magnetostrictive scaler in the other partial half. The perception of pain endured by the patient was evaluated by using Visual analogue scale (VAS). Statistical analysis used The minimum sample size required for this study was 52, (26 per group) with 95% Confidence Interval and 80% power. The results were analyzed using Pearson Chi-Square test and Mann Whitney U tests. Results The VAS score sum of ranks for magnetostrictive scaler group was 2378.50 and for piezoelectric scaler group it was 3081.50. The patients' perception of pain as per VAS scale favoured the magnetostrictive scaler group as being less painful as compared to the piezoelectric group. Patients preferred magnetostrictive scalers to piezoelectric scalers. Summary and Conclusions The outcomes of this study show that a considerably larger number of patients preferred magnetostrictive scalers due to the decreased perception of pain endured during periodontal scaling procedures as well as comfort level of the patient.
