- Abstract
An essay is presented on former U.S. first lady Dolley Payne Todd Madison's inheritance of the Montpelier, Virginia, estate of former U.S. president James Madison and his last will and testament. It examines Madison's will, attempts to determine the reasoning behind the clauses contained therein, and the alleged difficulties that the will caused for Dolley Payne Todd Madison following her husband's death in June 1836.
