- Abstract
Two morphologically different calf cornea cell cultures were characterized by chromosome analysis. The cultures were kept and passed more than one year and have reached passage 80-90. 24% of the cells from the fibroplast-like culture showed the normal diploid male animal chromosome set of 2 n=60. The remaining cells contained one or more metacentric or submetacentric chromosomes, mainly in higher passages, and were partially hypodiploid. 77% of the epithelial-like calf cornea cells had a set of 36 chromosomes of which 11 were acrocentric. The properties of the two cell cultures investigated indicate that the fibroblast-like cell culture is a cell strain, and the epithelial-like cell culture is a cell line.
