- Abstract
If mice were immunized with a second dose of 4× 10 sheep erythrocytes 6 weeks after primary antigenic stimulation, the kinetics of antibody formation at the cellular and humoral level were changed in comparison to the primary immune response. The secondary response was characterized by a diminished development of direct plaque-forming cells and a strong increase of indirect plaque-forming cells, connected with an enhancement of serum antibodies resistant to 2-mercaptoethanol. Furthermore the maximal values of the antibody-forming spleen cells were reached 1-2 days earlier. When the primary response had been increased by the additional injection of killed cells of Bordetella pertussis, an increased secondary response was found at the cellular and humoral level after the second injection of 4×108 sheep erythrocytes, given 6 weeks after the primary immunization. The conclusion is drawn that the cells of Bordetella pertussis given together with the primary antigenic stimulus prepare the lymphoreticular tissue of mice for the secondary response.
