- Abstract
Based on the results of previous studies entrepreneurial proclivity or orientation can be considered to be a relevant success factor of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial orientation including pro activeness, risk taking and innovativeness is an interesting issue regarding Hungarian small and medium sized enterprises. The Hungarian entrepreneurial culture started developing only after the transition from socialism to a market-based economy in the 1990s and necessity driven entrepreneurs motivated mainly by push factors are still more dominant compared to opportunity driven entrepreneurs. Quantitative research has been conducted with 200 SMEs owners. The authors applied the same entrepreneurial orientation (EO) scale which was used in the study of Matsuno, Mentzner and Ozsomer (2002). The results have highlighted that the reliability of the EO scale was low, as a consequence, it is not valid for Hungarian entrepreneurs. There are no significant methodological differences between their study and previous ones which indicates that the validity of the scale is more influenced by the different nature of Hungarian and Western countries' entrepreneurial culture. It can be explained by the unique socialization and socio-demographic factors of Hungarian SMEs' managers which determines their way of thinking and their attitude toward entrepreneurship.
