- Abstract
A commentary discusses the use of systemic postnatal corticosteroids to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics previously recommended against routine use due to potential complications, particularly an increased risk of cerebral palsy. However, recent research has shown that early systemic corticosteroids can reduce the risk of BPD and death or BPD. While dexamethasone increases the risk of cerebral palsy, hydrocortisone does not. The overall recommendation is still against routine use, but further research is needed to assess long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes.
