- Title
Katrina Lessons Learned: Lone Star rhetoric in response to Hurricane Ike.
- Authors
Pacheco, Jr., George; Boone, Jeff G.
- Abstract
Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ike were two storms similar in size and strength, however Katrina resulted in over 1000 more deaths in the United States alone. This rhetorical analysis uses Bitzer's Rhetorical Situation model to analyze the messages released by officials before Hurricane Katrina and three years later, before Hurricane Ike. Broadcast transcripts from nightly news programs were retrieved using Lexus-Nexus and analyzed for their content. It was found that Hurricane Ike messages differed significantly in their use of ominous terms and conditions as well as in the dire consequences that were possible.
