- Abstract
The article discusses the contrast between the commonly held belief in purposefulness both in life and evolution and the randomness of Darwinian evolution. The author holds that the Lamarckian view of evolution is most common and therefore intelligent design theory holds a special attraction. The responses of students to the definition of evolution proposed by the National Association of Biology Teachers demonstrate this supposition. Difficulties with design theory are also explored, with emphasis placed on the works of Michael Behe and Stephen C. Meyer.
