- Abstract
The article discusses a laboratory study wherein rat models of post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) were subjected to intracortical injection of ferrous chloride (FeCI2) using stereotactic techniques. Injuries became severe and neuronal apoptosis was observed. Type I excitatory synapses in the hippocampal neuropil increased at day 14 and Type II inhibitory synapses were observed at day 30. The study concluded that cortical neuronal degeneration, apoptosis, glial cell proliferation and ultrastructural hippocampal changes play a role in PTE onset.
