- Abstract
The article describes the foreshore vegetation in the neighbourhood of Georgetown, British Guiana, with emphasis on Spartina brasiliensis. The coast of British Guiana consists of a flat alluvial plain while its actual shoreline varies from point to point. The foreshore association consists of three societies namely the mudbanks to seaward, the sandy beach at the foot of the sea wall and the intermediate lagoons. It discusses the role played by S. brasiliensis in the primary colonisation of the newly raised mud bank and compares S. brasiliensis with Spartina Townsendii.
