- Abstract
Periodontitis shows clinical severity in patients with underlying type II diabetes mellitus compared to non-diabetic patients. Local antibiotics are one of the treatment choices used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in diabetic patients with periodontitis. This review aims to evaluate the evidence for the impact of local antibiotic treatment in adjunct to SRP in type II diabetic patients with periodontitis. A literature review is conducted through the PRISMA statement to include articles from databases. PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, DOAJ, Ebscohost, Embase, CINAHL, dan The Cochrane Library were searched for articles published from 2011 to 2022. Only randomized controlled trials aligned with the research question were considered eligible. Data was provided with periodontal indexes stated in the articles: clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), modified sulcus bleeding index (mSBI), gingival margin position (GMP), and bleeding on probing (BOP). Four articles were included after a thorough selection process using the stated criteria. Most studies show significant differences in the improvement of periodontal status associated with local antibiotics. Other clinical parameters produced no considerable difference in improvement. Further analysis was then conducted with the research tool of qualitative analysis. Periodontitis in patients with underlying type II diabetes mellitus shows additional benefits of using local antibiotics in adjunct to SRP, which is observed in CAL dan PD improvement.
