- Abstract
Patients hospitalised in intensive care units are particularly prone to fungal infections, mainly due to an extensive use of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. In the case described a 40-year-old patient was subjected to intensive therapy due to respiratory failure in the course of recurrent episodes of pneumonia. A large amount of white purulent discharge obstructing the right main bronchus was observed during bronchoscopy. In the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) culture, a strain of Candida glabrata was isolated in a significant count of >105 CFU/ml. Anidulafungin was administered as an antifungal agent, in accordance to the guidance of Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), as well as expert groups. The patient's clinical status has improved. No fungal growth was detected in follow-up cultures of BALF and the level of an inflammatory marker (C-reactive protein) returned to normal values.
