- Title
Thinking ‘no’ but saying ‘yes’ to student presence in general practice consultations: politeness theory insights.
- Authors
Rees, Charlotte E; Knight, Lynn V
- Abstract
The article discusses why patients feel unable to decline a general practitioner's (GP's) request of having a student present during their consultation. It mentions that although patient participant agreed to have a student present during their consultation, 20.8% of them preferred to see their GP alone. The author explains this behavior using the politeness theory. He states that requests threaten the requestee's freedom from imposition while refusals threaten the requester's autonomy.
