- Authors
Weissman, David E.; Quill, Timothy E.; Arnold, Robert M.
- Abstract
The article reviews the approach that can help surrogates through the decision making process when patients are unable to make decisions on their own. It clarifies that the surrogate's role is limited to the exercise of a substituted judgment based on the values and desires previously expressed by the patient. It adds that surrogates who are representing terminally-ill children are expected to decide on the best interest of the children.
