Noise Psychological effect in Isfahan hospitals environment.

- Abstract
Background and purpose: Observations has shown that noise is at the head of the list of complaints by both personnel an patients have been reported. The aim of the current study was to find source of disturbance due to hospital noise and discriminate between object and people source of noise production. Materials and methods: ex-post factor was the design of the research. In order to investigate relationship among variables, distress due to hospital noise was investigated among a sample of 161 postoperative patients in 23 hospitals located in Isfahan. Participants were selected according to systematic random sampling method. Participants completed patient disturbance due to hospital noise (Topf, 1985), Weinstein's (1978) sensitivity to noise and social desirability scale. Objective noise was measured via self report developed especially for the current study. Results: Findings indicate increment of sensitivity to noise causes increment of distress due to hospital noise (DDHN), while disturbance due to hospital noise (DDHN) increase when noisy utilities were increased in contrast to common sense DDHN decrease when roommates were increased. In contrast to common sense of roommate noise. Conclusion: Based on research finding, It can be concluded that degree and rate of reaction to noise, but in two different directions for things (noisy utilities) and persons (number of roommates) the first to increase and the second to decrease DDHN. Implications in hospital environment for decreasing perceived annoyance of noise were discussed.
