The article discusses New Zealand's strong interest in open international aviation and trade links. It mentions that after the second world war, the trade regime started opening up under the 1947 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade agreement, but the aviation regime remained nationalistic. It assesses how the improvements came about, and the roles New Zealand played must delve into Australia–New Zealand aviation and trade tensions, and government bailouts of Air New Zealand.
