- Abstract
Behavioral finance approach argues that rational decisions cannot be made due to psychological and sociological factors and emphasizes that individuals have cognitive tendencies that affect their financial decisions. Among the cognitive tendencies, especially mental accounting tendency draws attention. Mental accounting; It can be expressed as the process of monitoring, evaluating and finalizing financial processes in different classes in the mind. Mental accounting is used in the financial decision-making process and can affect the decisions of individuals. The financial social work approach, which deals with individuals' financial behaviors and financial decision-making processes, carries out interventions to increase the capacity of clients to take part in society as a rational individual. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the mental accounting disposition and the effect of mental accounting disposition on individuals' financial decision making in the context of financial social work. The findings obtained in the study show that mental accounting processes regulate financial behaviors and play an important role in the financial decision-making process. Thanks to short and long-term mental calculations, individuals can regulate their daily and monthly expenditures and make protective financial decisions for the future such as savings, investments and retirement. In particular, the evaluation of economic transactions in different classes and the creation of a specific budget for each class help individuals to provide self-control against excessive spending. Financial social work studies come to the fore at the point of increasing the awareness of individuals about mental accounting and other tendencies, providing financial behavior change in individuals and improving financial capacity.
