- Abstract
The article examines the role of general legal principles in the case law of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) since the entry into force of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (CFR). It examines the significance of general legal principles in selected areas and presents the relevant normative foundations. In particular, the principle of equality is treated as a fundamental principle of community law. The ECJ considers the prohibition of discrimination as a specific manifestation of the broader principle of equality. The right to paid annual leave and the protection of lawyer-client privilege are also discussed. The ECJ emphasizes that paid annual leave is a particularly significant principle of EU social law and that lawyer-client privilege is an essential element of the rule of law. However, it is noted that the exact scope of protection of lawyer-client privilege is difficult to define.
