THE END OF THE WORLD.
- Authors
COOK, PETER
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of newspapers owned and operated by the labor movement in Australia. Particular attention is paid to the launching of the daily newspaper "The World" by the Australian Labor Party in 1931. It was hoped that a Labor owned newspaper would destroy the misconceptions about the labor movement propagated by the capitalist press. The decline of the newspaper following the defeat of the Scullin Government and the electoral defeat of J. T. Lang in 1932 is discussed. The transfer of control of "The World" to businessman Frank Packer, the formation of Sydney Newspapers Ltd., and a subsequent buyout of the “The World” by Associated Newspapers Ltd. is examined.
