Translating the Acoustic Properties of Ukrainian Verse.
- Authors
Naydan, Michael M.
- Abstract
The article analyzes several poems including "La Bella Fornarina" by Pavlo Tychyna, "Prychynna" by Taras Shevchenko, and "Landscape of Memory" by Lina Kostenko. Particular focus is given to the role of sound in the translation of Ukrainian poetry. According to the author, translators should attempt to mimic the acoustic properties of a poem if they create a significant meaning in and of themselves. Other topics include tone and musicality.
