- Abstract
This article describes how the economic factors that are part of the divorce process are subject to interpretation and even condition the relational strategies of the members of reconstituted families. A qualitative, ethnographic study made with a sample of reconstituted families in Madrid shows the logic and codes that guide the conduct of such families in assessing their divorce process. Significant values and morally positive actions are more influential in determining the actions and ideologies of these social actors than the frameworks established by divorce legislation, personal history, marriage and family, gender mandates, the imperatives of kinship, desires, aspirations and familiar images. Considering a divorce from a different perspective and viewing it in interaction with these other areas provides not only a better understanding of these families, but also the process of social intervention.
