- Title
Rescuing Fragments: A New Task for Cinephilia.
- Authors
TOLES, GEORGE
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of enthusiasm for motion pictures, also known as cinephilia, in film theory through a focus on fragments of motion pictures. The author notes the views of film theorist Christian Metz regarding how film theorists must renounce cinephilia and resist engaging with motion pictures in order to understand them. He suggests that the effect of individual elements of motion pictures should be considered as opposed to the whole and discusses scenes from the motion picture "Other Men's Wives," directed by William Wellman.
